The views are enough to enchant you but that’s not all you’ll find along these hiking trails. Historical ruins, exquisite wildlife, and unique vegetation give outdoor enthusiasts an exciting variety of routes. Where To Find The Best Trails In Prince George's County
Bladensburg Waterfront Park
Formerly known as Bladensburg Marina, this park is nestled along the Anacostia River, as well as among the Port Towns of Bladensburg, Colmar Manor and Cottage City. The park features canoe, kayak, paddleboat, and bicycle/tricycle rentals, a public boat ramp, fishing pier, picnic pavilion, playground, a B & O Railroad caboose, community boathouse (storage facility) and historical displays. Interpretive pontoon river boat tours allow visitors to explore this surprisingly scenic river with the guidance of a naturalist. Canoeing and kayaking lessons are offered, as well as guided hikes and bikes rides, among many other interesting natural and historical programs. Special events include the annual Port Towns Day, Arts at the Waterfront concert series, various cultural festivals, and river clean-ups events. The hiker/biker bridge links this park directly to the Anacostia Tributary Trail System, and connects to Washington, D.C. via the new Anacostia River Trail.
Cheltenham Park
The Maryland park has acres of natural and cultivated habitats for wildlife species. Other popular recreational activities include fishing and bird watching. This park is a preservation of land perfect for hiking, horseback riding, camping, swimming, and picnicking. Visitors can gaze up and out at rural scenery and miraculous views.
Cosca Regional Park
Nature enthusiasts and families flock to Cosco Regional Park to view Maryland's untouched nature. After completing your hike, relax or watch educational videos at the Clearwater Nature Center located within the park. The center offers beloved wildlife displays, fun facts, and information on how to identify the different species and vegetation. Make sure to check the Nature Center's hours and don’t leave without experiencing the true nature of Prince George's County.
Fairland Regional Park
Of the 322 acres on Montgomery County side, only 39 acres are developed with athletic fields and courts. With 1.4 miles of paved, hard surface hiking trails in the park, you'll be lead to beautiful vistas bubbling with life. The natural surface trails take you through the forest to uncountable adventures and chances to see wildlife. If you prefer taking a dip in the pool, you can visit the Fairland Aquatics Center. Governor’s Bridge Natural Area
Enjoy fishing opportunities on the 8-acre lake, a loop trail that encircles the lake, as well as excellent opportunities for hiking, bicycling, and nature study. Pack a lunch and host a picnic, or nourish your soul while soaking in the sun outdoors.
Lake Artemesia
The 38-acre lake is a multi-use park located on 55th Ave in Berwyn Heights. The facility offers fun for the whole family including: an aquatic garden, fishing areas, miles of hiker/biker trails, bird watching opportunities for finches, orioles, ibis, and other birds. Enjoy a packed picnic lunch and start your day fishing in the freshwater lake. Then setup the grill for a nice afternoon BBQ and finish your visit with a walk on a trail before dinner.
Patuxent River Park
Comprised of more than 7,000 acres of natural area parklands along the eastern boundary of Prince George’s County. Features boat ramps, fishing piers, and hiker/biker, horseback trails. Camping, canoe and kayak rentals, nature hikes, river ecology boat tours, and natural history programs.
Walker Mill Regional Park
The trail system mostly resides on a state park with easy, paved trails. Experience more than 500 acres of striking natural beauty including a half basketball court, play equipment areas, an open shelter, a picnic area, and a pathway. Continue venturing along these Maryland hiking trails to uncover stories of Prince George’s County's unique history.
Watkins Regional Park
If you’re looking for a diverse network of trails and a day full of fun, head to Watkins Regional Park, a public park including the Watkins Nature Center. Walk, hike, or jog through tree-lined trails and wooded areas. With Maryland hiking trails ranging from beginner to intermediate, the park welcomes explorers of all ages and Fido, too. There's also recreation galore, including a miniature train, two playgrounds, a walking trail & playing fields. If biking is more your speed, you can also explore the trails on two wheels. Take your time exploring the park, where you can end the day by cooling off by Patuxent River or having an afternoon picnic.
Wetlands Park
To see that wildlife up close and personal, consider a kayak, boat, or paddleboard. Prince George's County has a diverse ecosystem and offers visitors opportunities to see wildlife, including the best birding opportunities.
